SBIR/STTR Bootcamp
The VelocityTX Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Bootcamp is a nine-week program that will guide you through the process of submitting a Phase I SBIR or STTR Proposal. Learn from experts who have secured over $400M in funding, network with fellow researchers and entrepreneurs, and increase your odds of success in securing SBIR/STTR funding in this cutting-edge, fast-paced program bringing non-dilutive federal funding to San Antonio. On average one in five Phase I proposals submitted with guidance from our partners at SBIR Advisors are funded.
SBIR and STTR funding has many benefits: an SBIR or STTR grant is not a loan and does not require you to give up equity. Additionally, SBIRs are a stable, predictable source of funding that will enable you to keep your intellectual property rights.
The next SBIR/STTR Bootcamp will begin on January 11, 2024.
What Does it Cost?
You pay nothing unless your proposal is funded.
For Phase I Submissions:
- The company will enter a 6-month retainer contract with SBIR Advisors to do business development (a total of no greater than $27,750). Historically, the business development results in ~$6M in proposals submitted for Phase II, with a 20% win rate.
- FOR STTRs ONLY: VelocityTX can serve as the Research Institute to assist in the execution of the Phase I proposal.
For Phase II Submissions:
- The company gives SBIR Advisors 5% of the total award amount
- FOR STTRs ONLY: VelocityTX can serve as the Research Institute to assist in the execution of the Phase II proposal.
Eligibility and Qualifications
The program is geared towards researchers and entrepreneurs with applicable dual-use technologies that have both military and civilian application. The program is perfect for individuals with minimal knowledge about SBIR and STTR funding who are submitting a Phase I proposal for the first time OR small businesses re-submitting their proposals to increase odds of success. Registrants should self-certify their eligibility to receive SBIR or STTR grant funding. To qualify for SBIR funding, an organization must meet the SBA requirements for a Small Business Concern (SBC):
- A for-profit U.S.-based company
- May be in the legal form of an individual proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company, corporation, joint venture, association, trust, or cooperative
- More than 50% directly owned by individuals or other SBCs who are U.S. residents
- Has, including its affiliates, not more than 500 employees

About the DOD Funding Opportunity
The knowledge and skills you will gain through this bootcamp may apply to many grant solicitation opportunities. The bootcamp dates are aligned with the expected pre-release of the Joint DoD SBIR 22.2 / STTR 22.B funding opportunity in April 2022.

Annually, VelocityTX and SBIR Advisors host two one-day SBIR/STTR workshops. These educational events are a great opportunity to learn the basics of the SBIR and STTR programs, get your questions answered by an SBIR expert, and find out if SBIR or STTR are right for you.
